Ryan Cassata and The Top Surgeons Release New EP: This Machine Kills Transphobia
Ryan Cassata with band, The Top Surgeons, provide us an EP that is a dope mix of punk, folk, grunge, indie rock, and a pure fucking awesome.
Bad Friends with Black Cats Release New Single: “Okay Bye”
Bad Friends with Black Cats’ new song “Okay Bye” starts off as a folk punk sound that reminds me of Sticky Steve and Mischief Brew i.e. fucking rad.
Your Best Nightmare Releases New Album: A Simple Solution for Toxic Masculinity
I am so stoked to dig into A Simple Solution for Toxic Masculinity by Your Best Nightmare, and I’m even more stoked to catch them live at the Fuzebox in Albany on April 3rd!
Ugly Cowboys Release New Song: “I Wanna Make You Cum”
If the 8th grader in you smiles at the word cum, but the more mature person in you recognizes that the song is also an existential cry to find pleasure in a world gone made, then this song is for you.
One Last Job Releases New Single: “Another Night”
One Last Night has released “Another Night” a folky punk tune with some rad horn parts particularly in the chorus.
Wet Moon Releases New Single: “I’m Ejaculating”
Are you a fan of “Orgasm Addict” by the Buzzcocks? “Sex and Violence” by The Exploited? “Rory Rides Me Raw” by The Vaselines or “Code Blue” by TSOL then you will no doubt enjoy a song about ejaculation
The Ugly Cowboys Releases: “Life Sucks, Do Drugs”
Despite the fact that I didn’t have a "cheap vodka & bong rips" period during college and my general lack of drug experience, I find this to be one catchy ass fucking song.
MOFGY Releases New Single: “Whoop-De-Doo”
MOFGY’s new single, “Whoop-De-Doo” has a folk sound with a lo-fi style recording that reminds me of Pete Seeger or Woodie Guthrie with a punk soul.
The Flatnoise Releases New Single: “Living in the Front Row”
I reviewed their single “Misunderstood” a few weeks ago, so I was stoked to see hear this new tune.
Nolen & Friends Release New Single: “Sailboat Song”
What is the line between folk music and folk punk? Does it matter? Folk often has told stories that are true to life and punk has always been about sharing what you feel to the fullest. So much like I’ve argued that a lot of hip hop is as punk as the most circle pit worthy song, so is so much of recent folk music that fits the punk ethos if not the standardized sound.
Hurrican Holly Releases New Album: “Screaming the Storm Out”
So I came of age in the early 1990’s and while Hurricane Holly doesn’t specifically sound like Jewel, Paula Cole nor Ani Difranco, I could still see them all playing a show together.
Stefan West Releases New Single: “Happily Ever After”
Stefan West reminds me of Dave Hause mixed with the Weakerthans with is mix of pop punk, emo and folk punk.
Your Best Nightmare Releases New Single: “Promising Young Woman”
I reviewed Your Best Nightmare’s self-titled EP back in July, so I was stoked when I saw they had a new release. In this new song you get a sort of 50’s sounding song mixed with overtones of horror punk all played with a ukulele and some sort of organ overtop some simple but effective drumming.
Abstract Releases Folk Punk Single: Up Yet!
We all know the story. Punk rocker gets old, puts down electric guitar and picks up acoustic to become a folk punk troubadour: Tim Barry, Chuck Ragan, Tony Sly, Dave Hause, Frank Turner, etc., but this may be the first time I’ve known of a hip-hop artist putting down his beats and changing up spitting out dope ass flow to playing acoustic guitar while singing pop punk melodies.
The Flatnoise Release New Single: “Misunderstood”
There are a lot of folk punk artists out there, and I love a lot of them and have released an album with four of them, but it’s a little odd to have a folk punk ensemble. I dig this for sure. It’s got all the elements of pop punk but overlayed with folk guitar melodies.
Frightwig Release New Single: “Redistribution of Wealth”
So I’m a little surprised this is the first I’ve heard of Frightwig. They’ve been around on and off since the 1980’s and could easily be considered forerunners of the riot grrrl scene that was part of my teens in the early 1990s.
